We are significantly less than 10 weeks into the Trump Administration. Tom Homan - who is a serious man, and not a politician's toadie - says the Border is the most secure he's seen it in his lifetime. That's not bad, compared to its being, basically, non-existent a year ago.
Trump has declared the cartels to be terrorist organizations - which is a pretty serious step (no other President did it, despite pretty consistent pressure for it). Pete Hegseth (with VP Vance and DNI Gabbard) paid a substantial visit to the Border and he has been pretty clear that DoD is preparing to strike the cartels if directed to do so (and he wouldn't be talking openly about preparing for it without White House approval).
SoS Rubio has been to Panama, and met with its President; Hutchinson (China) is out of Balboa and Cristobal (I have no personal sense of the significance of Blackrock's buying that interest). He is pursuing increased security in the Arctic (with both Greenland and Canada), where new trade routes may be competing with Panama.
Trump actually has some other substantial issues on his plate right now (Ukraine, world trade relations, among other things). To say there's been "nothing serious from Trump" is not the assessment I would make. Didn't sound like the assessment MacGregor was making, either.
Interestingly, MacGregor believes China is a minor player (being only the supplier of raw material), while the cartels are the major bad guys. My own theory has been that China has a controlling interest in the cartels, and that they operate as Chinese subsidiaries.
