Only twenty-one years old, he hadn't finished but two years of Engineering at what was then a prestigious City College Of New York. Nonetheless he was being sent to Panama by The Department of Commerce to work on the enlargement and widening of the canal. The steamer got as far as Port au Prince Haiti, when on December 7th Japan bombed Pearl Harbor. That ship turned around, headed back to New York. The Panama canal enlargement project was abandoned. Within a few months, my father and his four brothers had all joined the army. My father was later injured at Normandy; he worked as a piping engineer all over the world in the decades after.
Widening the canal would have been a multi year project, would have sucked a lot of money, men and other resources from the war effort everywhere else in World War Two.

I wonder what will trigger the shooting war between American citizens and the foreign invaders. I’m guessing same day attacks by groups of 4 to 10 Chinese military on airports, malls, and large sporting events.
