I’ve been reading Ordeal by Hunger: The story of the Donner Party by George Stewart. It’s a great book with many important lessons for our times. Throughout reading this book I wonder how many people today could endure the hardships of the emigrant trail of the mid 19th century. Unfortunately I do think we learn the answer to that question as we head into 2023 and come face to face with hardships of the 21st century
I grew up on the CT shoreline, where we knew there existed ,out there! , a leper colony on an island. ( A family friend did deliveries by boat. )
What we did Not know ,and until 6 months ago I did not know, was the location just a couple miles offshore of Plum Island agricultural research facility.
USDA and DoD research on using parasites to spread animal diseases as weapons.
I went to East Lyme high-school in the eighties,and lived in the area in the early 90s. Lyme disease is named for the 4 locales it originated from. Until 6 months ago, I didn't know that we lived less than 3 miles ( across the sound by ferry) from a lab that used ticks as part of their vector series. Come to find out,my allergy to red meat since I was in my 20s...is a known sequelei of Lyme Disease.
