During the years I spent in combat — real combat where people were being blown to pieces around me many times — people would call “cowards” the al Qaeda and Taliban we helped create and who were very courageously fighting us against all perceived odds. We would blow them to shreds year after year and they kept coming. Vietnam.

And yet “cowards” would be the last man standing when we left Iraq, Afghanistan, Vietnam.
