Thailand atmospheric: Food/fuel prices rising. More people turning to fish for protein.
The attached note is from a Thai source known to me. She accompanied me during serious fighting in 2014 when there were many deadly street battles. She had become known on the street for courage, so I started taking her along for several months of fighting. She’s a successful businessperson and a good friend.
Background on Talapia in Thailand:
During the 1960s, Thailand was experiencing a protein shortage. Japanese Emperor Akihito famously gifted 50 tilapia fish to King Bhumibol of Thailand. Ask any Thai — they know this story.
Today, tilapia is on menus all over Thailand.
Protein prices now surging in Thailand. People relying more on Talapia fish. My friend just send this note and photo:
”Today’s menu is fish tomyam. And it is a pink fish which its ancestors were taking really good care directly from the former emperor of Japan’s and Late King Rama9’s hands. Great gift! When prices of other meats are rising, Thai people are turning to Emperor+King’s protein source. ☺️In open market, fish stands are always crowded. Thai Is very very lucky. Wish we all realize and treasure it. ☺️”
